Start with how you use the space
List what works and what does not. Storage, counter space, lighting and traffic flow matter more than trends.
Photos of rooms you like help communicate your taste.
Set a budget with a cushion
Set a budget and include a cushion for surprises such as hidden damage. Decide where to spend and where to save.
Ask your contractor which choices drive cost the most.
Order of work
Typical order: demolition, rough plumbing and electrical, framing and drywall, flooring, cabinets, counters, tile, fixtures and paint. Knowing the order helps you decide when to order materials.
Long-lead items like cabinets should be ordered early.
Living through it
Plan a temporary kitchen or bathroom, protect floors and set expectations for dust and noise. Agree on work hours and communication.
A good contractor will talk you through each phase.
