Fall: the main event
Early fall is the best time to aerate and overseed fescue. Apply a starter fertilizer, keep seed moist and avoid heavy traffic until it establishes.
A second feeding in late fall helps roots build.
Spring: light touch
Early spring is the time for pre-emergent weed control. Avoid heavy nitrogen in spring. Mow at a good height as growth picks up.
Check for thin spots and plan fall work.
Summer: survive
Fescue struggles in heat. Mow high, water deeply and early in the day, and avoid fertilizing heavily. Watch for disease in humid weather.
Brown patches may go dormant or may need treatment.
Soil and shade
A soil test tells you what your lawn needs. Shade-heavy yards may need shade-tolerant seed or a different approach like mulch beds.
Compacted clay benefits from regular aeration.
