Common warning signs
Rusty or discolored hot water, rumbling or popping noises, puddles around the tank and water that no longer gets hot are the usual clues.
Age matters too. Many tank heaters last around a decade with care.
What you can check
Look for moisture at the base and fittings, and note the age on the label. Flushing the tank occasionally helps remove sediment, if your manufacturer recommends it.
Make sure the temperature is set to a safe level.
Repair, replace or go tankless
Minor problems like thermostats and elements can be repaired. A leaking tank means replacement. Tankless units save space and can lower energy use but cost more up front.
A plumber can compare options for your household.
Prevent a flood
A drain pan with a line to a drain and a leak sensor can limit damage. Know where the shutoff valve is.
Replace an old tank before it fails if it is in a finished space.
